On Friday September 4th cross country senior team members (and parents) were recognized before the start of the varsity football game.  We greatly appreciate the dedication, effort and time the athletes/parents have given to the program, Thank You!   The team went to Pella the following morning for their first meet of the year and showed out.  Girls team placing 4th and the boys team placing 7th.  Notable performances:  Bridget Johnson 14th, Lily O’Brien 25th, Payton Rowe 26th and Devon Keuning 27th.  The team was supposed to compete at the Gilbert meet on Thursday September 10th, but it has been postponed due to course conditions.  The team is back in action at Ballard on Monday September 14th.  Best of Luck!  Go Bluejays!

Below is a summary of our Senior Cross Country Team Members.

Ryan Abens – parents are Darren & Jana Abens, Jodi Abens & Chris Messer, and they would all like to wish Ryan a very Happy 18th Birthday today!  While in high school, he has participated in Cross Country, DECA, Blue Jay Digital, Select Choir, Spring Musical, Track, & Baseball.  Awards and achievements include Varsity Letter.  His post-graduation plan is to attend Iowa State, majoring in Computer Engineering.  “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.” – Dr. Seuss

Rylie Anderson – parents are Todd and Arlene Anderson.  While in high school, he has participated in Cross Country and Wrestling.  Awards and achievements include placing both 6th and 4th at State Wrestling.  His post-graduation plan is to attend Iowa State, majoring in Computer Science.

Megan Boyd – parent is Jeffrey Boyd.  While in high school, she has participated in Cross Country, Golf, and DECA.  Awards and achievements include Academic Honors and National Honor Society.  Her post-graduation plan is to attend Iowa State University.

Jordan Clark – parents are Bryan Clark and Susie Downing.  While in high school, he has participated in Track and Cross Country.  His post-graduation plan is to attend DMACC in Business Administration.

Rachel Currant – parents are David and Kelly Currant.  While in high school, she has participated in Cross Country, Marching Band/Drumline, FFA, DECA, Select Choir, Basketball, Large Group and Individual Speech, Spring Musical, Track, Student Council, Jazz Choir, Jazz Band, Tennis, Fall Play, FCA, Youth Group, Uke Gal Ladies, Junior Class Officer, 4H, Polk County Council, Youth Leadership Initiative of Des Moines, ILTC, Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership, National Honor Society, Iowa Youth Institute through the World Food Prize, and Faith For Her Bible Study.  Awards and achievements include A Honor Roll, qualifying for State in Large Group Speech, Individual Speech, and DECA, and she lettered in Cross Country, Track, and Choir.  Her post-graduation plan is to go into college on a pre-med track and go to med school, and she says college will show her where she wants to go from there!  “So many thanks to my mom and dad for always supporting me and encouraging me. My siblings, Nick and Ariel, who always make me laugh and help me to see the big picture. And my family, friends, and directors/coaches/advisors who have helped me throughout my past four years. Thank you God for guiding me every step of my life.”

Jessica Duffy – parents are Paul Duffy and Kim & Bernie Engelhaupt.  While in high school, she has participated in Cross Country, Track, Select Choir, Jazz Choir, Spring Musical, and Yearbook.  Awards and achievements include induction to National Honor Society, A Honor Roll all four years, and lettered in Choir.  Her post-graduation plan is to attend Central College in Pella and major in Communications with a minor in Business Management followed by a career in Reporting or Journalism.

Alyssa Fick – parents are Brent and Denise Fick.  While in high school, she has participated in Cross Country, Track, Band, Select Choir, DECA, Student Council, Speech, National Honor Society and 4-H.  Awards and achievements include qualifying for State in Track and Speech, and Internationally in DECA.  Her post-graduation plan is to attend a 4-year university to major in Elementary Education or to become a Physical Therapist.  “I thank my family, who has always been there for me and supported me.  I also thank each of my teachers and coaches for their hard work and encouragement!”

Devon Keuning – parents are Terrell and Holly Keuning.  While in high school, he has participated in Baseball, Cross Country, and Track.  His post-graduation plan is to attend DMACC to study Software Engineering.

Jack Keuning – parents are Jared Keuning and Katie Keuning.  While in high school, he has participated in Soccer, Basketball, FCA, and National Honor Society.  Awards and achievements include National Honor Society, Academic Letter, and Honor Roll.  His postgraduation plan is to attend DMACC for two years and then transfer to a four-year college.

Alexandra Miner – parents are Amanda Calder and David Miner.  While in high school, she has participated in Cross Country, Golf, and Rowing with Des Moines Rowing.  Awards and achievements include National Honor Society and Academic Honors.  Her postgraduation plan is to pursue a career in science, most likely environmental science.

Gabe O’Brien – parents are Angie and Ryan O’Brien.  While in high school, he has participated in Cross Country, Band, Choir, and Golf.  Awards and achievements include National Honor Society Induction, and lettering in Band and Academics for the past three years.  His post-graduation plan is to attend college (undecided as to where) to become a Physician’s Assistant.  “I will sacrifice my own life to save Pakistan.”  The dedication that this child shows for his country, is a way to live.

Maddy Padgett – parents are Matthew and Jill Padgett.  While in high school, she has participated in Cross Country, Track, Marching Band, Youth Leadership Initiative of Des Moines, Junior Class Officer, National Honor Society, Select Choir, School Play, Large Group Speech, Individual Speech, Faith for Her Bible Study, Uke Gal Ladies, Youth Group, FCA, DECA, and Jazz Choir.  Awards and achievements include A Honor Roll, Large Group Speech State, Individual Speech State, DECA State, and she lettered in Cross Country, Track and Choir.  Her post-graduation plan is to attend either the University of Northern Iowa or Auburn.  “Thank you to my parents and friends for supporting me these last four years and always pushing me to do better.”

Spencer Pitts – parents are Bill and Amanda Pitts.  While in high school, he has participated in Baseball, Track, Cross Country, and Basketball.  Awards and achievements include lettering in Baseball, Track, and Cross Country.  His post-graduation plan is to attend college for either culinary or mechanical technician and play baseball, or possibly entering the Military.  “If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you.” – Fred DeVito

Gabe Ploeger – parents are Gordon and Dawn Ploeger.  While in high school, he has participated in Soccer, Cross Country, and FCA.  Awards and achievements include National Honor Society, A Honor Roll, academic letter and athletic letter.  His post-graduation plan is to attend DMACC for two years, then transfer to the University of Iowa to become a writer.  “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Noah Robben – parents are Amanda Robben and Dustin Robben.  While in high school, he has participated in Cross Country, Bowling, Soccer, and Track.  His post-graduation plan is to becaome an Auto Body Technician or Welder.

Payton Rowe – parents are Jason and Nicole Rowe.  While in high school, he has participated in Cross Country, Basketball, Wrestling, and Track.  Awards and achievements include four years of Varsity Cross Country runner, three years of Varsity Track runner, State Cross Country twice, and National Honor Society.  His post-graduation plan is to attend Grand View University to run Cross Country and/or Track and study pre-law, then transfer to Drake to complete Law school. “I would like to thank my parents for always being supportive and making sure my priorities are always straight. I would like to thank everyone who supported me as it kept me motivated throughout these four years. I would like to thank my graduating class as well as other classes I became close with who made these four years memorable.”

Trenton Silvers – parents are Crissy and Gregg Silvers.  While in high school, he has participated in Cross Country, Track, Band, Select Choir, DECA, Student Council, Speech, National Honor Society, and 4-H.  Awards and achievements include qualifying for State in both Track and Speech, and Internationally in DECA.  His post-graduation plan is to attend Iowa State University for Biochemistry or Forensics.

Ethan Williams – parents are Jason and Natasha Williams.  While in high school, he has participated in Cross Country, Fall Play, Speech, and Spring Musical.  His post-graduation plan is to study Education.  “We can’t change what’s done, we can only move on from it.”

Caleb Wirtz – parents are Rozlyn and Andrew Wirtz.  While in high school, he has participated in Marching Band, Cross Country, Select Choir, Basketball, FCA, and Baseball.  After graduation he would like to attend the University of Iowa.  “I’d like to thank my parents for their support, and to my teachers and coaches for giving me a positive experience throughout high school.”
